Twining Memo Officially Released: 1947 Document Confirms UFOs as Real, Advanced Craft

In a significant step toward greater openness on unexplained aerial mysteries, the US government has included the historic “Twining Memo” in its latest batch of declassified UAP files. Signed on September 23, 1947, by Lieutenant General Nathan Twining of the Air Materiel Command, the document bluntly states that the reported flying disc phenomenon “is something real and not visionary or fictitious.”

Written just months after the famous Kenneth Arnold sightings and the Roswell events, the memo details consistent observations from credible witnesses. It describes objects with metallic or light-reflecting surfaces, circular or elliptical shapes flat on the bottom and domed on top. Many flew in well-kept formations of three to nine objects, often without sound, though a rumbling roar was noted in rare high-performance cases. Speeds routinely exceeded 300 knots in level flight, with extreme maneuverability, rapid climbs, and evasive actions suggesting manual, automatic, or remote control.

Twining noted these craft outperformed known US or foreign aircraft of the era, ruling out simple misidentifications like weather balloons or meteors in many cases. This high-level military assessment directly fueled early Air Force investigations like Project Sign. While skeptics have long downplayed such reports, the memo’s language—coordinated with technical experts—highlights a serious national security interest that persisted for decades.

Recent Pentagon releases of over 160 UAP-related files underscore ongoing official acknowledgment of the phenomenon’s reality, even as explanations remain elusive. Independent researchers and declassified archives continue to affirm the memo’s authenticity, pushing for fuller public disclosure on these persistent, high-performance objects.
